EVENT:  African Holocaust Commemoration 1619

The City of Richmond will read a City Proclamation designating October 1st the annual day for Commemorating the African Holocaust.  October 1st will be the day for reflection, reconciliation and the beginning of healing in recognition that in 1619, the transatlantic slave trade began.

2019 marks 400 years since the horrific African Holocaust*, also known as “MAAFA” destroyed millions of lives and changed the course of history for all time.  In 1619 the stain of African blood infected America with racism, division and disenfranchisement.  African blood also made America the most powerful nation in the world.

Ezibu Muntu, Dance, Education and Culture,  a 501 (3)(c) organization will remember those forgotten.

Mayor Levar Stoney, government officials, religious and cultural organizations will join with Ezibu Muntu to bestow honor with a “Remember Them” convocation.  Location: Shockoe Bottom’s Slave Plaza also known as the 17th Street Market from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.  Press and other media are invited.

Individuals, corporations and foundations are invited to support this auspicious occasion by purchasing a tax deductible ad in the event’s commemorative booklet.  The cost of an 8.5 x11 color page is $1,000, ½ Page $500, ¼ Page $250.

“The estimates vary. Anywhere from ten to twenty-five million Africans died in slave ships en route from Africa to the Americas. A lifetime of bondage awaited those who survived the passage. This massive crime against humanity–the enslavement and exploitation of tens of millions of human beings–is an American holocaust. (The extermination of the Native American population is another.) Yet one can scour the commemorative architecture of the nation’s capital and find little evidence that America’s racial holocaust ever occurred.”
